Hidden Path Entertainment, best known for their enthralling tower defense game, Defense Grid, has revealed they are developing an HD remake of the classic RTS Age of Empires II.

The game will be hitting Steam exclusively on 9 April 2013. The standard launch price is US$19.99 (R181.60). Those who pre-purchase for US$17.99 (R163.43) will get early access to the game on 5 April. There’s also a bundle which throws in Age of Empires 3 Complete for US$27.99 (R256.30).

The game is remastered for 1080p+ displays, and boasts an “enhanced visual engine” for better textures on terrain, water, and fire, as well as new-fangled lighting effects.

Age of Empires 2 HD will contain all the campaigns and content from the original AoEII: Age of Kings base game and its The Conquerers expansion.

Steam Workshop support will be integrated, meaning that we can expect tons of cool mods in the spirit of the original Age of Empires 2 mod scene.

Other Steam features include achievements, leaderboards, matchmaking and cloud saves.
